Introduction

In November, 1969, the Peace Festival was started to gather citizens together and yearn for peace by breaking through Korean tragic contemporary history. Its fundamental goal is to awaken the people‘s loyal spirit in the tragic site where rebels from the Yoesu-Suncheon Rebellion entered Jirisan Mountain. The ritual for the mountain spirit, which has long served religious rites, is simultaneously held. Though this ritual was served in Cheonwangbong Peaks‘ Seongmosa Shrine at first, due to the irregular weather and the difficulty of climbing, people assigned the Jeyeongso to Sinseonneodeul, Sunduryu Valley, Jungbong Peak, build up an altar for the ritual for the mountain spirit, and then served ritual services in a Confucian way.

The primary purpose of the ritual is to wish the year of good harvest with proper wind and rain, as well as to long for national peace. During this period, citizens purify their body and mind, preventing the badness from entering ahead by drawing the golden strip. The Peace Festival, which is held for two days, has been extended as multipurpose art festival by holding both the events for Citizen‘s Day and Field Day together. First held to honor the people‘s wish for national peace and to cure their sorrow engendered since the Korean War, it is held in every autumn with a citizens‘ athletics meeting.
