Saengcho International Sculpture Park
Saengcho International Sculpture Park

Saengcho Ancient Tomb, which was built during the prehistoric ages, and Saengcho International Sculpture Park, which is adjacent to Eooesanseong Fortress, constitute a unique cultural and artistic park where antiquity is harmonized with modernity: here you will find two ancient tombs from the Gaya Period along with around 20 contemporary sculptures by domestic and foreign artists. The artworks installed here were created by world-renowned sculptors who participated in the Sancheong International Sculpture Symposium, held in 1999, 2003, and 2005.

Eooesanseong Fortress is located in the hillock above Saengcho Ancient Tomb on the left (366.9m above sea level); it is a mountain fortress in an encircling form of masonry construction characteristic of the early Goryeo Period. It has been recorded that during the Japanese invasion in the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, Hongui Janggun Gwak Jae-u directed his men to this stronghold to defend the land against Japanese soldiers heading north and earned a great victory.

Behind, at a slope in Taebongsan Mountain around 200~240m above sea level, there is the Saengcho Ancient Tomb which has been designated as Gyeongsangnam-do Monument 7. Inside the tomb, rocks were stacked to form a chamber and the ceiling was made narrow and covered with a capping stone; this, and stone chamber tomb has an entry and passageway, and is designed with the opening in the front. There were around a hundred of such tombs, and this is considered to be an important site for the research of ancient tombs of the Gaya Period.

Saengcho International Sculpture Park was built on a spot that gives you a sweeping a view of the Saengcho-myeon district office, the goeuptteul, and the Gyeonghogang River. Nearby, you will find restaurants highly rated for local delicacies made from freshwater fish, dishes such as pirijjim, ssogari-tang (Mandarin Fish Soup), and eotang guksu; this is a great place to sample the local cuisine of Sancheong.
