Recognized as one of the top experts in practicing Confucianism during the Joseon Dynasty, Master Nammyeong Jo Sik was a great scholar among the intellectual community of Yeongnam region and the representative scholar of Sancheong, a town famous for birthing countless scholars. He was a true Confucianism scholar who wrote and submitted Eulmyo Danseongso to King Myeongjong of the Joseon Dynasty with hopes for benevolent rule of the nation. A historical site that includes his Sancheonjae, Deokcheonseowon Confucian Academy, Nammyeong Memorial Center, Sesimjeong Pavilion, his grave site, and a memorial service shrine is at the area around the Deokcheon Gangbyeon in Sicheon-myeon, which appears in his poem, Duryusan Yangdansu. Every spring, one can stand in the yard of the Sancheonjae and enjoy the calming scent of the Nammyeongmae that Jo Sik himself planted while overlooking at the beautiful scenery of Deokcheongang River and revere his respectable philosophies and the spirit of scholars.
